Writers Cabins

Designed for month-long residences away from technology and distractions, these Writers Cabins — officially known as the Diane Middlebrook Studios at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program — are ideal places to finish up a manuscript or flesh out your script. The four 280 square foot cabins sit facing south, west, and the Pacific Ocean, and are all skewed a few degrees from each other, with a steel canopy that joins them together. The exteriors are covered in unfinished red cedar, each cabin has its own private outdoor space, and the interiors offer great views thanks to the large, sliding glass doors.

  • Kiev Slide Apartment

Normally having a plant-covered wall in your kitchen would be the highlight of your apartment — but then again, most apartments don't have slides inside. Set on the top floor, the Kiev Slide Apartment had its old, floor plan-dividing stairway replaced by a new staircase for going up, and a stainless steel slide for coming down. The renovated space has an open floor plan on the bottom floor, which also houses two children's bedrooms, while the unused upper floor was converted into a master bedroom with ensuite, guest bedroom, and office. Skylights let in plenty of natural light and provide a healthy way to wake up, but we're guessing a trip down the slide would be the highlight of your daily morning routine.

  • Saint Paul Apartment

A successful merging of the old and the new, the Saint Paul Apartment takes full advantage of its interior contradictions. The one-bedroom space is housed in the attic of an 18th-century building in Paris' historic Le Marais district, and sports a neutral palette that lets the home's details shine. Those details include natural rafters that command attention thanks to the white walls and ceiling, a sleeping area separated by a steel and glass wall, and a wall of solid walnut panels that hides storage space, a dressing room, laundry, and bathroom. The result is an impressive space that feels much larger than you'd expect given its small size.
