Fresh House

In the 2022 thriller Fresh, Daisy Edgar-Jones' character Nora meets Steve, played by Sebastian Stan, in a grocery store. Instead of living happily ever after, Steve holds Nora captive in his basement. To create the sinister sanctuary of the main antagonist, director Mimi Cave called upon Jen Morden. The production designer built the mid-century lair from the ground up on two different sets. This first represents Steve's main floor, a retro-inspired space dominated by rich woods, concrete built-ins, herringbone flooring, and 1970s furniture. For the other set, Morden dreams up a twisted chamber where Steve holds women captive. A floating concrete staircase resembling a fallopian tube leads to the basement with hand-carved walls, a surgical room, and dungeons made up of sunken beds, stainless steel toilets, and sunset murals. Morden explains that "every design detail was specific to the feelings we wanted to convey about Steve, his ego, his thirst, and how to properly trick our audiences in their interpretation of him."
