La Fabrica

Renovated from the ruins of an abandoned cement plant, La Fabrica is a place of both work and leisure for Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill. Spread throughout the former silos, smokestacks, underground tunnels, and machine rooms, the estate is made up of four parts — the studio, La Cathedral, the gardens, and the residence. The existing concrete shell was left virtually untouched, creating massive rooms with towering walls. Sheer white curtains filter in natural light, providing a soft contrast to the monolithic palette. While the exterior of the building retains its industrial identity, lush plants, climbing vines, and rooftop gardens temper the facade, turning the rigid fortress into a whimsical abode.
