Shack in the Rocks

Just an hour outside of Melbourne, Sean Godsell Architects has placed the Shack in the Rocks. The home is situated on a large concrete plinth nestled among the natural boulders of a grassy hillside. Adapted from a simple hay shed, the home includes two steel-frame volumes — one for cooking and eating and the other for sleeping — connected by a single slanted roof. Transparents panels on the roof's horizontal slats filter in light, while fully glazed walls surround interiors in views of the rugged Australian scenery. To expand the interior, the roof extends well past the structures to create a sheltered living space overlooking the pastoral landscape.
