One of the Pacific Northwest's most iconic structures is getting a $100 Million overhaul courtesy of some of its most talented architects. The Space Needle Century Project will see Olson Kundig update the 1962 structure in some profoundly important ways. The circular observation deck will see its wire and metal safety cages replaced with slanted glass screens, dramatically improving the views, while the interior observation area will receive floor-to-ceiling glass. A new spiraling staircase will connect those areas with the elevators and rotating restaurant below, which will get a new glass floor that exposes the mechanics as well as the ground below. Renovations are scheduled to begin in September with the first stage of work slated to open next year.
