Waikato River Retreat
On the banks of New Zealand's Waikato River, an architect builds his own serene retreat. The modest dwelling takes on a modern, asymmetrical form and is clad in warm cedar screens. A Garapa timber deck leads into the light-filled living spaces, dominated by a central kitchen. The interior also features a mezzanine where a Gaboon plywood wall conceals the door leading to the bedrooms. Tasmanian oak flooring runs throughout and when paired with the all-white palette, creates a bright, airy atmosphere. Walls of glazing looks out onto the river while also opening to an outdoor terrace that offers views of the Hakarimata ranges in the distance.
