Washington Hillside Retreat
Perched above the Puget Sound on the San Juan Islands, the Hillside Retreat is a compact complement to the Hillside Sanctuary. The two-bedroom dwelling, designed by Hoedemaker Pfeiffer, offers a modest guest house for visiting family. Its stone exterior harmonizes with the natural surroundings while a shed roof echoes the main house's Appalachian spirit. Inside, light-filled living spaces sit above a pair of bedrooms. To the west, a wooden box containing a glazed dining room floats above the landscape in the treetops. Although windows throughout the interior frame in views of the rugged setting, an outdoor terrace cantilevers toward the water, affording sweeping views of the coastal scenery.
