Zeb Pilot House

Built as both a single-family home and an example of green living, the Zeb Pilot House combines angular lines with comfortable spaces. Born of a collaboration between Snohetta, research body SINTEF, Zero Emission Building partners, and Optimera, the house has a roof that's tilted towards the southeast and covered with solar panels; this array, combined with geothermal wells, more than covers the home's energy use, with enough left over to power an electric vehicle year-round. Despite the modern form, the interior is surprisingly cozy, with walls of brick, stacked firewood, and natural wood panels. The exterior is finished with a garden, outdoor atrium with fireplace, a swimming pool, and shower, the latter of which use solar-generated thermal heating to maximize the energy savings.
