1982 Aero Vodochody L-39C Albatros Jet
When Tom Cruise needed a jet to train for Top Gun: Maverick, he reached for an L-39 Albatros. When the producers of Tomorrow Never Dies needed a credible threat for a 1997 Bond arms bazaar scene, same answer. Aero Vodochody's Czech-built trainer has that kind of resume. The world's first turbofan-powered trainer when it debuted in 1968, the L-39 went on to fly with more than 30 air forces across nearly 3,000 examples before flooding the civilian market after the Cold War ended. This 1982 L-39C has been pulled well clear of stock. The original Ivchenko powerplant is out, replaced by a Honeywell Garrett TFE731-3-1G turbofan producing 1,000 lbs more thrust, while the airframe has been stripped down 2,000 lbs lighter than standard. Avionics are fully modernized with a Garmin GTN650XI, dual G3X displays, G35R, and G5. The airframe shows 2,021 total hours with 29 hours since a complete restoration, the engine 7,727 hours total time with 29 hours since major overhaul. Show-quality gloss black paint with red trim completes the blacked-out stealth that matches its reputation. It sits in Montana, ready to go.
