Getting back to nature doesn't have to mean getting back to sub-par accommodations. The Treehotel offers seven unique treehouses, each built with an eye on sustainability. They include a mirrored cube, a UFO-shaped room, and a bright red building strangely named The Blue Cone. The latest addition is the aptly-named 7th Room, designed by Snohetta and featuring multiple rooms centered around a netted terrace, furthering the treehouse feel. Apart from the modern interior designs, the hotel also offers a tree-based sauna and hottub, various outdoor activities, and easy access to the restaurant in nearby Harads, Sweden.

  • Greydon House

Pairing an 1850s Greek Revival home with an amazingly similar three-story addition, Greydon House offers not just 20 rooms, but a unique sense of Nantucket's identity. Calling to the site's seafaring history, the hotel has details like a pine-paneled check-in area, murals of far-off ports, and bespoke beds, all courtesy of designers Roman and Williams. The result is a space that's both perfectly matched to its surroundings and yet entirely its own, and thanks to its central location, it's also a perfect base from which to explore the rest the architectural time capsule of an area has to offer.

  • Icehotel

It's rebuilt every winter in northern Sweden, only to melt away in the spring. Yet that impermanence is part of the appeal. Built with two ton blocks of ice from the nearby Torne River, the Icehotel is the result of collaborations between artists and engineers, who work together to create the arched hallways, unique rooms, and reception areas. Since it stays around 23 degrees inside, guests are outfitted with warm outer clothing and Arctic sleeping bags for their bed. Warm accommodations are also available, as is an ice chapel and ice bar, and thanks to a solar-powered addition, part of the hotel will now be able to operate year-round, giving even more people a chance to spend a night on ice.
