Donald Wexler House

Considered the father of Palm Springs architecture, Donald Wexler was responsible for the Palm Springs International Airport, the Dinah Shore estate, and was a pioneer in the use of steel in residential architecture. Surprisingly, his own house was all wood, using a post and double-beam system for a flexible floor plan. The home measures just over 2,400 square feet, with three bedrooms, two baths, tongue-and-groove ceilings, and full-height glass. It received a modern renovation, overseen with help from Wexler himself, that added terrazzo floors, stainless steel appliances, marble slabs in the bathrooms, and a new roof, new HVAC, and new solar system, yet retained details like the vertical fir siding and spun metal can lights. Outside there are ancient boulders, hedges for privacy, a black-bottom swimming pool, and a plaque for its listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
