Honda Prototype Autonomous Work Mower

The yard is ripe for autonomous machines: A defined, confined space, low speeds, and static obstacles make it perfect for the current limitations of autonomously piloted vehicles. Beginning with a pilot program next year, Honda will begin testing its prototype AWM — the Autonomous Work Mower. The AWM begins in "Teaching" mode, being manually driven around the work area, while software creates a map using the Global Navigation Satellite System. "Playback" mode begins true autonomous operation, with the mower following the pre-programmed route. Routes are stored via cloud storage, with information like cut height and striping also retained. A demonstration of the AWM can be watched here, with Honda now taking applications from companies for the testing program starting in 2024.
