Jerry Garcia's Mu-Tron III

The gurgling, voice-like filter on "Estimated Prophet," "Shakedown Street," and "Feel Like a Stranger" didn't come from some elaborate studio setup. It came from a small box on Jerry Garcia's pedalboard. Designed by Mike Beigel in 1972 and manufactured by Musitronics, the Mu-Tron III was the world's first envelope-controlled filter, using proprietary opto-isolators to deliver low-pass, bandpass, and high-pass responses that reacted dynamically to picking intensity. This unit, serial number 21685, is the oldest known Mu-Tron III from Garcia's collection, played in both the Grateful Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band before ending up in the hands of crew chief Steve Parish after Jerry's death. Rusty, dirty, and missing a knob, it includes its original Musitronics PS-1 power supply, along with Mode, Peak, Gain, Range, and Drive controls and a footswitch to engage the effect. There are cleaner Mu-Trons out there, but none with a resume like this one.
