Remmarholmen Island
Located just five minutes from the mainland in Porkkala, Finland, Remmarholmen Island is a private, modern off-grid retreat. The five-acre island is home to a main house, a guesthouse, and a sauna, designed by architect Joanna Maury and crafted from granite, glass, oak, pine, and rusted Corten steel, with three total bedrooms, three baths, and a sunken conversation pit. Wooden paths made of durable Siberian larch connect the structures and the large terraces, while geothermal energy, a desalination system to obtain drinking water from seawater, and a wastewater system help keep things habitable while reducing the island's ecological footprint.
