Rolex Space-Dweller Watch

Rolex famously lost the contract to outfit the astronauts of the NASA moon missions to Omega and the Speedmaster. Yet shortly after the Project Mercury astronauts visited Japan in 1963, Rolex decided to capitalize with a special Ref. 1016 Explorer dubbed the Space-Dweller. It's not clear how many were made, or if they were limited to the Japanese market only, but it is known that they're extremely rare. Sporting a 36mm stainless steel case and a matching bracelet, the glossy black dial has "Space-Dweller" branding, with gilt graphics and golden luminous material on the hands and indexes. Currently auctioned by Phillips, it comes with two Rolex Japan service receipts dated June 19, 2003, and August 5, 1998.
