Long before they founded Apple, the "Steves" — Woz and Jobs — set out to build highly illegal blue boxes. The devices allowed users to hack Ma Bell's system and make free long-distance calls to anyone across the world, and the pair's creation was the first digital version of the device ever created. Up for auction is one of just a handful thought to have survived confiscation; a first-iteration model, it lacks the board changes Woz implemented to accommodate the less expensive membrane keypad, and was purchased directly from Wozniak by the seller in autumn of 1972, making it a nearly 50-year-old piece of computing history.
