The Titanic's Astor Pocket Watch

John Jacob Astor IV was the wealthiest man aboard the Titanic when it struck an iceberg on the night of April 14, 1912. He helped his eighteen-year-old wife, Madeleine, into Lifeboat No. 4, told her "I'll see you in New York," and stepped back. His body was recovered seven days later. On it was this watch. Purchased from Tiffany & Co.'s New York flagship in 1904 and made by Patek Philippe, the 44mm pocket watch is 18K yellow gold with a white enamel dial, a manual-wind movement, and a JJA monogram engraved on the case back. A Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirms its provenance. The watch passed through four successive owners: son Vincent, his wife Brooke, her son Anthony Marshall, and his wife Charlene, before heading to auction. One hundred and fourteen years later, it is still keeping time.
