First direct flight to Greenland in almost 20 years
In 2007, Air Greenland launched a route between Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and Kangerlussuaq Airport. A year later, it was gone, and with it the only direct flight between the US and Greenland. That changed on June 14th, when United started twice-weekly seasonal service between Newark to the Greenland capital of Nuuk, which recently opened a new airport friendly to larger jets. The narrow-body Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft is used for Flight UA80, and takes just over four hours to make the trip; once there, passengers can enjoy world-class hiking, excellent fish and seafood, and fascinating wildlife under the summer's midnight sun.
