At CES in Las Vegas, Toyota announced plans to build Woven City. The 175-acre city of the future is set to be located at the base of Mt. Fuji in Japan and will be powered completely by hydrogen fuel cells and solar panels. Acting as a living laboratory, the company can test and develop new technology including autonomy, robotics, personal mobility, smart homes, and artificial intelligence in a real-world environment. The metropolis will feature three street types divided between faster vehicles, a mix of lower speed, personal mobility, and pedestrians, and a park-like promenade for pedestrians only while its 2,000 residents will live in sustainable wood homes constructed using traditional Japanese wood joiner. Toyota expects to break ground in early 2021.
