William LaRue Weller famously used wheat in place of rye in his bourbon recipes, a mashbill that's now shared with its distillery mate Pappy Van Winkle. As a result, W.L. Weller Special Reserve is considered the "Original Wheated Bourbon Whiskey", is nearly as popular as its Grail-level cousin, and as a result, is becoming increasingly hard to find. Once readily available on store shelves, Weller "Green Label" is now considered an allocated bottle for most states, leaving many to wait in line in hopes of grabbing a bottle of Pappy's much cheaper alternative. Exceptionally smooth, it presents caramel on the nose, with flavors of honey, butterscotch, and wood and a hint of sweet honeysuckle on the finish. Bottled at 90 proof, its soft character makes it equally well suited to slow sipping and cocktails.
