Andy Warhol's Jack Nicklaus
Andy Warhol was not a golfer, nor a fan of the sport. It was at the behest of frequent benefactor Richard Weisman, then, that in 1977 he produced a painting of Jack Nicklaus as part of his The Complete Athlete Series. Weisman was so smitten with the work's mix of Augusta green and golden yellow that he kept it for himself, only parting with it as a donation to the World Golf Hall of Fame. As the Hall is now relocating and downsizing, the work is up for sale for the very first time. Signed by Warhol on the overlap — the artist rarely signed his work — it has also been authenticated, signed, and dated by Frederick Hughes on the overlap, and arrives with a letter of provenance from the World Golf Hall of Fame.
