Portraits of Courage

No matter where you land on the political spectrum, it's tough not to admire a project like Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief's Tribute to America's Warriors. The book is a collection of oil paintings and stories by President George W. Bush which honors the sacrifice and courage of America's military veterans. Sixty-six full-color portraits and a four-panel mural of veterans who have served since 9/11 are featured, many of whom were sent to war as a result of Bush's orders — and many of whom he has come to know personally. President Bush will donate author proceeds to a non-profit organization that works to ensure that post-9/11 veterans and their families make successful transitions to civilian life.

  • Recipes From The Woods

You don't need to be a hunter to appreciate the food you can find in the wild. It doesn't hurt, though. Penned by French chef and writer Jean-François Mallet, Recipes from the Woods: The Book of Game and Forage is a cookbook ode to eating whatever nature gives you. Its 100 recipes are organized by food type, including sections for furred game, feathered game, herbs, snails, and nuts and berries. Whether you're wanting to expand your culinary world beyond what you find at the store or preparing to fend for yourself in a worst-case scenario, it's worthwhile reading.
