Aurora X-65 Prototype Aircraft

Traditional aircraft use flaps and rudders to control airflow, and thus the craft itself. Aurora's X-65 prototype, part of DARPA's Control of Revolutionary Aircraft with Novel Effectors (CRANE) program, employs active flow control technology instead. On the prototype, 14 effectors — holes in the flying surfaces — use pressurized air to control pitch, roll, and yaw, improving performance while reducing complexity. A modular design allows for replacing the outboard wings and effectors, enabling engineers to test multiple configurations without the need to build multiple planes. The prototype is currently being built, with the first unmanned test flights of the full-scale, 7000 lb. aircraft at speeds up to Mach 0.7 slated for summer 2025.
