Ayrton Senna's 1986 Lotus 98T

The Lotus 98T was the last F1 car to wear the black and gold of John Player Special, the cigarette brand whose 14-year sponsorship of Lotus produced one of the most iconic liveries in motorsport history. Driven exclusively by Ayrton Senna in the first half of 1986, the Lotus 98T won in Spain by 0.014 seconds over Nigel Mansell, the third closest finish in F1 history, then won again in Detroit after Senna rejoined 20 seconds behind the leader following a puncture and passed every car on track. In qualifying trim, the 1.5-litre Renault V-6 produced over 1,000 brake-horsepower, with turbos running so hot after a single lap that mechanics pulled them with asbestos gloves as they sparked on the pit floor. Bought directly from Lotus in 1988, restored by Paul Lanzante Ltd, and at auction now for the first time in nearly a decade.
