Daniel Weller Emmer Wheat Bourbon
Many bourbon fans know of W.L. Weller, one of the first to sell a "wheated" bourbon in Kentucky. Few know of his grandfather Daniel, who moved his family to the state by boat in 1794. Buffalo Trace is honoring this pioneer with a new experimental line exploring the impact of different strains of wheat on Weller's sought-after bourbons. The first release is made using the same mash bill as other Weller expressions but replaces red winter wheat with emmer, an ancient Egyptian grain that's rarely seen in modern spirits. The resulting bourbon is aged for nearly 12 years and bottled at 94 proof, with notes of orange zest, caramel, and cinnamon on the nose, and flavors including oak, honey, and orchard fruits. Daniel Weller Emmer Wheat is the first in the series, with one limited expression expected to release every other year, each arriving in a clear 750ml glass bottle with a unique compass-topped stopper hiding the GPS coordinates of Daniel's KY farm underneath.
