David Hockney's Tall Dutch Trees After Hobbema
Inspired by Meindert Hobbema's 1689 painting The Avenue at Middelharnis, David Hockney's Tall Dutch Trees After Hobbema (Useful Knowledge) 2017 is unique for a number of reasons. It's a six-piece work, with angled portions that make use of "reverse perspective." A portion of the work appeared on the cover of The New Yorker in 2018, and the entirety of it measures 65" tall by 145" wide. Signed, titled, and dated 2017 on the reverse of the center panel, it will be auctioned as part of Sotheby's Evening Sale in London on March 25th.
