De Castelli Samotracia Copper Motorcycle
Italian furniture house De Castelli utilizes modern shapes and raw metal finishes in much of its work, creating pieces that are as much art as functional furniture. When the company commissioned a motorcycle that would compliment their design philosophy, Italian industrial designer Mario Trimarchi had something exciting in mind — bodywork made of raw-finished copper. Trimarchi eschewed the usual aerodynamic curves in favor of an almost origami-like design of sharp creases and folds that mimic movement even while at rest. The bodywork will oxidize with the process expected to be complete in a century — making it a perfect fit with Italy's long history of art and design.
