Born from an increasing number of Internet shutdowns by nefarious regimes, the Fallback Portable Satellite Modem provides backup access to important news. A subscription service, it would use machine learning to predict internet shutdowns, then kick into action. A standalone device receives data over satellite, decrypts it, and formats it into news articles which can then be accessed by a smartphone from its own Wifi network. A text-based UI ensures that only critical information is passed along. The service, still just a prototype, was created by Bahareh Saboktakin, Khulood Alawadi, Qifan Zhao, and Yi-Fan Hsieh.
