Grand Seiko Ushio 300 Diver Watch
For years, Grand Seiko's dive watches had one problem: size. The new Spring Drive U.F.A. Ushio 300 Diver, unveiled at Watches & Wonders, fixes that. At 40.8mm, it's the smallest diver Grand Seiko has ever made, wearing roughly the same footprint as a Rolex Submariner. The case and bracelet are machined from the brand's proprietary High-Intensity Titanium, about 30% lighter than steel, and finished with the Zaratsu polishing that made Grand Seiko's reputation, alternating mirror-bright and brushed surfaces with almost sculptural precision. The blue Ushio dial, a name drawn from the Japanese word for tide, uses a textured gradient that suggests light filtering into deep water. Inside is the Caliber 9RB1 Spring Drive U.F.A., accurate to just ±20 seconds per year, making it the most precise mainspring-powered watch ever made. Water resistance reaches 984 feet, nearly 500 more than the three-handed 1965 Seiko diver worn by Japanese Antarctic expedition members that started this lineage.
