Jean-Michel Basquiat's Sabado por la Noche (Saturday Night)
Created in 1984, the same year as his first solo museum show, Jean-Michel Basquiat's Sabado por la Noche (Saturday Night) is among his most iconic works. As with many of his efforts, it mixes multiple motifs and subjects. Against a bold pink and maroon background, one can pick out West African Griot figures, as well as a dog, female forms, and sheets of paper scrawled with various symbols and terms, including "knowledge", "truth", and "birth". Measuring 6.5' by 7.5', the work will be auctioned by Christie's as part of their 20th/21st Century Evening Sale in Hong Kong on March 28.
