BMW2002はBMWにとってもエントリーレベルのモデルで、モーターとシャシーは素晴らしいものの、オプションはそれほど多く搭載されていない小さなクルマだった。1972年型「2002」は一からコンペに出られるほどのスタートラックになるまで作り上げられ、70年代のプライベーターレーサーのオマージュとなった。エンジンやシャシー、トランスミッション、このクルマのすべてが過酷なレースサーキットの環境に耐え抜き、BMWのトラックの歴史がここから始まったのだ。
