ボーイング社が極超音速機の開発研究をし始めて60年が経つ。まだ実用化には至っていないが、このハイパーソニック・ビークルコンセプトで少なくとも20年以内に実現する未来を垣間見ることができる。マッハ5(極超音速)で飛行し、ターボファンエンジンでテイクオフし、高度9万5千フィートでラムジェットエンジンに切り替わる。これが実現すれば、ニューヨークから東京までを約2時間で結ぶという、既に小さな世界をより小さくさせる交通手段となりそうだ。
