NASA初の実験用ジェットが完成したのは10年以上前。Xプレーンは、2003年以降超音速機を商用利用から追いやってきた音速の壁を破るべく造られた機体である。NASAはXプレーンの開発のため247億5千万ドルをロッキード・マーティン社に費やし、現在ジェットから衝撃波を離し轟音が発生しない独特な形の艇体を採用したほぼ無音の音速機開発を手がけている。全長約28m、翼長約9mの航空機は2021年末までに発表される予定だ。
