Kurt Cobain's Skystang I Guitar
Kurt Cobain played a lot of guitars throughout his tragically short career, but during the band's In Utero tour, it was this guitar — the Skystang I — that he played the most. Delivered to Cobain in July 1993, the Sonic Blue Fender MG-69 Mustang has a red tortoiseshell pickguard with a distinctive yellow V-shaped mark beneath the strings. This, combined with a white humbucker pickup, makes it easily identifiable, appearing on stage in 53 of the 63 In Utero tour performances, including Cobain's final public performance at Munich's Terminal 1 in March 1994. The guitar is owned by Kurt's brother Chad Cobain and has been on loan to Seattle's MoPOP since 2007; with such provenance and documented use, it is expected to fetch over $1 million at auction.
