More megapixels aren't always better, but in the case of the Leica S3, they're most certainly welcome. Its 64-megapixel 30 x 45mm medium format sensor offers a 71% increase in resolution over the prior model, with the same 3:2 aspect ratio as the 35mm format, but a 56% larger sensor area. It also has a dynamic range of 15 f-stops and a max ISO of 50,000, allowing it to perform in a variety of conditions. The entire area of the sensor can also be used to capture 4K video, with level-adjusted 48 kHz, 16-bit stereo sound captured alongside via internal or external mics. A Leica Maestro II processor, 2 GB buffer, and USB 3.0 help keep the proceedings moving along, while the magnesium body, Gorilla Glass cover for the 3-inch monitor, stainless steel bayonet, and robust sealing ensure it's ready for action both in the studio and in the field.
