Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid Sedan
The last Mercedes-AMG E 53 that arrived in the US wouldn't be considered a slouch, making 429 horsepower from a turbocharged six-cylinder. The upcoming E 53 upstages the previous model thanks to its hybrid drivetrain, notching up to 603 horsepower in Race Start mode. An electric motor between the engine and nine-speed gearbox adds 161 horsepower to the 443 from the turbocharged inline-six, good for a 0-62 sprint of 3.8 seconds in Race Start. A 21.2-kWh 400-volt battery pack sits underneath the rear floor, with a European WLTP range of 62 miles — but expect substantially less in EPA testing. AMG styling cues like a vertically-straked grille and wider front fenders give the E 53 a subtle variation from standard E-Class models; inside, AMG branding and new graphics for the instrument panel are the major changes. Double-valve active dampers and rear-wheel steering will be standard when the E 53 arrives in the third quarter of 2024.
