Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse Ref. 5738G-001 Watch
The golden ratio has guided architects and artists since ancient Greece. In 1968, Patek Philippe applied it to its iconic Golden Ellipse collection, which derives its singular elliptical case shape from the golden ratio, and the new ref. 5738G-001 is the most refined expression of that geometry yet. Unveiled at Watches & Wonders, the white gold case measures 34.5 x 39.5mm and just 5.9mm thick, making it the thinnest watch in the current Patek catalogue, with a sunburst olive green dial carrying applied white gold baton hour markers and cheveu-style hands above an 18K gold dial plate. Inside, Caliber 240, a Patek staple since 1977, runs at 21,600 vph. It packs 152 parts and 27 jewels into a 2.53mm-thick movement, and keeps the case slim via a 22K gold off-center minirotor. A shiny olive green calfskin strap with cream stitching ties the whole thing together cleanly. Some watches follow trends. The Golden Ellipse was shaping them during the 1970s and hasn't stopped since.
