Ralph Ellison's Omega Speedmaster Watch

New York auction house Phillips just sold a 1968 Omega Speedmaster Professional formerly owned by Ralph W. Ellison. The Invisible Man author wore the 145.012-67 SP for 25 years until his death in 1994. It features a 40mm stainless steel case with a tachymeter bezel and matching bracelet. The piece's condition is described as crisp and displays minor aging. Before the auction, the previously missing chronograph pusher was replaced with a period-correct one, its movement was cleaned and adjusted, and the gasket and crystal were updated to ensure water resistance. The Speedster was estimated to sell for up to $20,000, but due to the historic significance of its owner, it sold for a record amount.
