Since 2013, engineer Richard Jenkins has been refining his unmanned surface vehicles — Saildrones — to travel father and collect more data with better instruments. In August, SD 1021 set a world record for fastest unmanned East-to-West Atlantic crossing, and in October, SD 1021 set another record, coming back from the UK to the US. Powered completely by the wind for propulsion and solar energy for onboard equipment, Saildrones have spent almost two years in the Arctic and circumnavigated the Antarctic, proving their reliability in the most extreme climates on Earth.
