Scout Traveler SUV

The Scout is back, 44 years after the last one rolled off the Fort Wayne, Indiana assembly line. Volkswagen is resurrecting the brand, minus the International part, as an EV and plug-in hybrid, with production slated to begin in 2027 at a new factory in South Carolina. The design isn't outright referential but captures the original Scout's unique look. The kink at the B-pillar, black-masked grille, and upright lines make the four-door SUV concept immediately recognizable. VW claims the Scout is as off-road ready as it looks, with the chassis and suspension designed for dirt. A completely new body-on-frame platform — with a solid rear axle — has been developed, with a front sway bar disconnect and front and rear locking differentials. Scout claims an EV range of 350 miles, with the hybrid range-extender option good for 500 miles, with the latter's gas generator located in the rear of the chassis. Reservations are open now, with prices for the SUV aimed at $60,000 or less when it arrives as a 2028 model.
