Traditionally new TV sets focus on resolution, or backlighting, or some other tangible feature. Sony's 2021 lineup focuses on something else entirely: processing. Dubbed the Cognitive Processor XR, the chip inside these new sets divides the screen into numerous zones and detects where the "focal point" is in the picture — mimicking how the human brain works — adjusting elements like color, contrast, and detail to deliver the best picture possible. Audio is likewise processed to match what's on the screen and upconverted to 3D surround sound. The new chip will be available across a wide range of Sony's 2021 sets, from the flagship 8K LED Master Series Z9J to the 4K X92. Pricing and availability info will be announced in spring 2021.
