The Eclipse App

On Monday, April 8, 2024, an annular solar eclipse is coming to North America. An estimated 635 million people will get to see the Moon block out a portion of the Sun, but only 43 million people live in the path of totality and get to view a total solar eclipse. To encourage people to get out and see the spectacle, The Eclipse Company has partnered with the Planetary Society and Bill Nye — yes, the Science Guy — to create The Eclipse App. Available for iOS and Android, it offers guided countdowns for totality and phenomena, a listing of events, viewing sites, and parks that are in the path of totality, and more. While the difference between a partial and total viewing might not sound like a big deal, the sky gets 10,000 times darker at 100% vs. 99% coverage. The next eclipse to cross North America will hit only three states when it arrives in 2044, so this is likely the best chance for a vast majority of Americans to take in this rare cosmic event.
