Top Gun: Maverick Darkstar Concept Jet

Top Gun: Maverick smashed the box office with a combination of compelling story and a realistic portrayal of dogfighting that used real humans in real planes. One star of the show that might or might not be real is the Lockheed Darkstar. The top-secret stealth plane is featured early in the film as Tom Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell flies it as a test pilot. The futuristic jet carries a more than passing resemblance to another famous Lockheed project — the SR-71 Blackbird. While the SR-72 is still under development, Top Gun: Maverick producers collaborated with Lockheed for the design of the Darkstar, which takes cues from concept images available of the SR-72. A full mockup of the aircraft was made for the film, which can be seen in this behind-the-scenes video here.
