Unitree GD01 Transforming Mecha Robot

The generation that grew up on Neon Genesis Evangelion and Pacific Rim now has a six-figure chance to live out what they spent Saturday mornings watching. Unitree, the Hangzhou robotics company that already claims 60 to 70 percent of the global quadruped robot market, unveiled the GD01 by having its founder climb inside and punch a brick wall down in one hit. The machine stands 9.8 feet tall, weighs 1,102 pounds with a pilot aboard, and is built from a skeleton of titanium alloy and aerospace-grade aluminum with a carbon fiber shell, all designed in-house. Its defining feature is transformation: from upright bipedal walking to a stable four-legged crawl in seconds, no external assistance required. The cockpit sits in the torso, the pilot straps in, and the GD01 moves with deliberate, full-weight steps. Unitree positions it as a civilian vehicle for rough terrain transport, exploration, and rescue operations, though a full spec sheet, including battery runtime, operational range, and top speed, has not been released. For now it is available in China only, with no US distribution or regulatory pathway announced. Unitree's official guidance to buyers: use it in a friendly and safe manner.
