In Praise of 70mm
You can talk about the glory of 70mm film — the color, the texture, what the format allows the camera to capture — but 70mm had a bigger role that had nothing to do with technical aspects or aesthetics. After the landmark 1948 court case that broke the monopoly of the big studios and their theater chains and changed the studio system itself, 70mm might be responsible for saving the film industry as a whole.
