Runaway slave Peter escaped north to freedom and joined the Union Army during the Civil War. Photos of Peter's back, scarred by a whipping at the hands of his owners on a plantation in Louisiana, were published in The Independent and Harper's Weekly and brought the cruel reality of slavery to the American public's notice. Emancipation, directed by Antione Fuqua and starring Will Smith as Peter, comes to theaters December 2 and Apple TV+ December 9.
