When They See Us
In 1989, five New York teenagers — Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise — were questioned and arrested for the rape and beating of a woman in Central Park. The case started a media firestorm, with calls to reinstate the death penalty in New York state and stoking racial animus among New Yorkers. In 2002, Matias Reyes, a convicted murderer and serial rapist in prison, confessed to the crime which was confirmed by DNA evidence. The five men spent between 6 and 13 years in prison. This is their story. When They See Us premieres May 31, 2019 on Netflix.
