1985 Lancia Delta S4 Group B Rally Car
Lancia first found success in rally racing with the Fulvia and then developed the all-conquering Stratos — one of the best rally cars of all time and an instant automotive classic. Fast-forward to the '80s, and Lancia was looking to continue winning in Group B. When Audi demonstrated the superiority of all-wheel-drive, Lancia's next effort would be the Delta S4. Only superficially related to the production Delta, the Delta S4 used a tube-frame chassis with a mid-mounted four featuring a unique compound turbo-supercharger setup to reduce turbo lag and make 480 horsepower. Pictured here is chassis 215, which competed in the final season — 1986 — of Group B, winning the opening Rallye Monte-Carlo. The car was used as a backup for the rest of the season and continued racing until 1990. Wearing its original Martini livery, the car will go to auction at RM Sotheby's London event on November 5, 2022.
