1996 Land Rover Discovery Camel Trophy Support Vehicle

The 1997 Camel Trophy event took place in Mongolia, traveling from the northern mountains through the Gobi desert and ending in the ancient capital of Karakorum. 40 competitors from 20 nations took part in the off-road challenge, piloting specially-prepared Land Rover Discovery SUVs. While this 1996 Discovery wasn't a team participant, it did cover the race as a support vehicle and was built to an almost identical standard. Power comes from a 2.5-liter 300Tdi turbodiesel inline-four mated to a five-speed manual. Uprated equipment includes Old Man Emu dampers, Hella auxiliary lights, Warn winch, roll cage, intake snorkel, roof racks, and the all-important kayak. After the 1997 event, the car was repainted by Rioja Red from its original Sandglow by Land Rover, with another repaint by the current owner. The interior features custom wood shelving in the rear cargo area and the original Camel-branded clock on the dash. The SUV is currently up for auction on Bring a Trailer.
