Andy Warhol's White Disaster
While not as prevalent in pop culture as his Campbell's soup cans and Marilyn Monroe portraits, Andy Warhol's Death and Disaster series was arguably his most important, impressive work. 1963's White Disaster (White Car Crash 19 Times) is a perfect example. Standing 12 feet tall and six feet wide, it sees a black-and-white image of a deadly car crash repeated multiple times across the canvas, forcing the viewer to contemplate the impermanence of life. Given its monumental size and historical importance, it has been exhibited many times over the years and will be sold by Sotheby's at their Contemporary Evening Auction on November 16th.
